Tibet & Silk Road Trip Itinerary

A lifetime opportunity to share the riches and the wonders of Tibet and the Silk Road with Ru-Lan Weng Geiger, Chinese born artist and scholar, from September 13 to October 3, 2003. Total of 21 days.

Sept 13 (Sat) Los Angeles/Guangzhou

Sept 15 (Mon) Guangzhou/Guiyang (L,D)

Upon arrival in Guiyang, the guide will meet us at the airport and transfer to the hotel. In the afternoon, we have a city tour. Two nights at the Bai Dun Hotel (4*, local best).

Sept 16 (Tue) Guiyang (B,L,D)

Tour to see the Huangguoshu Waterfall. We will also see how the minority Miao people make the wax-printed cloth.

Sept 17 (Wed) Guiyang/Chengdu (B,L,D) Day trip to Anshun, then transfer to the airport for our evening flight to Chengdu. Overnight at the Holiday Inn Crown Plaza (5*)

Sept 18 (Thu) Chengdu/Lhasa (B,L,D) Upon arrival, the guide will meet us at the airport and we will travel by coach to Zedang. Overnight at Zedang Hotel (3*, local best)

Sept 19 (Fri) Lhasa/Gyantse (B,L,D) Morning sightseeing and temple tour in Zedang. After lunch, coach to Gyantse. Overnight at Jiang Zi Hotel (3*, local best).

Sept 20 (Sat) Gyantse/Shigatse (B,L,D) Visit the Tashilumpo Monastery and the free market in the morning. After lunch, coach to Shigatse. Overnight at Shigatse Hotel (3*, local best).

Sept 21 (Sun) Shigatse/Lhasa (B,L,D) After breakfast at the hotel, we take the coach for Lhasa. Three nights accommodations at Lhasa Hotel (4*, local best).

Sept 22 (Mon) Lhasa (B,L,D)

Morning tour to the Norbulingka Palace, the summer palace of Tibetan Kings, and Medicine Hill. After lunch, visit the 7th century Jokhang Monastery, one of the holiest shrines in Tibet, and Eight-Corner Street to get a glimpse of daily Tibetan life.

Sept 23 (Tue) Lhasa (B,L,D)

Morning tour to the renovated Potala Palace which rises majestically from the face of sacred Putuo Hill. In the afternoon, meet the Tibetan artists. If time permits, visit the Sera Monastery.

Sept 24 (Wed) Lhasa/Chengdu (B,L,D)

Transfer to the airport for the morning flight to Chengdu. In the afternoon, visit the Panda base. Overnight at the Holiday Inn Crown Plaza.

Sept 25 (Thu) Chengdu/Urumqi (B,L,D)

Transfer to the airport for a morning flight to Urumqi. In the afternoon, visit the Provincial Museum. After dinner, enjoy a local dance performance before taking an overnight train to Kuche (Please note on the train, one compartment can accommodate four people; there are two upper and two lower berths.)

Sept 26 (Fri) Kuche (B,L,D)

Morning arrival in Kuche. Transfer to the hotel. Then visit the Thousand Buddha Caves in Kuzil and Kumutula, en route we will pass several Great Wall Beacon Towers. Visit to the canyon nearby. Overnight at Qiu Ci Hotel (local best).

Sept 27 (Sat) Kuche/Kashgar (B,L,D)

Morning train to Kashgar, a center for trade between China and the outside world for 2,000 years. In the afternoon, visit the Tomb of Yshufu. Overnight at Qi Ni Wa Ke Hotel (local best)

Sept 28 (Sun) Kashgar/Urumqi (B,L,D)

After breakfast we head directly to the Great Bazaar, alive with storybook scenes of thousands of merchants haggling for camels, carpets and other native goods; imams on donkeys and veiled women in their black robes. After wandering the Great Bazaar, we will visit Id Kah Emin Mosque, one of the largest in China, the Tomb of the Fragrant Lady and a Tibetan family before flying back to Urumqi in the evening. Overnight at Hoi Tak Hotel (5*).

Sept 29 (Mon) Urumqi/Turpan (B,L,D)

After breakfast, enjoy an excursion to Tianchi Lake, nestled in the Tianshan mountain range. Return to Urumqi after lunch and take a city tour that gives a glimpse of the major sights of this northwestern city. Populated by Han people and thirteen ethnic minorities, Urumqi is quite different from the usual Chinese street scene. Here we can see nomadic Khazakhs. In the afternoon, take a train ride to Turpan. Enjoy a music and dance performance and dinner in the evening. Overnight at Oasis Hotel (3*, local best).

Sept 30 (Tue) Turpan/Urumqi/Beijing (B,L,D)

Morning tour to Gaochang, the ancient walled capital of the Urghurs that flourished between the 7th and 14th centuries, and the ruins of Jiaohe City where large fragments of actual streets and buildings remain. We’ll also visit Grape Valley, in lush contrast to the desert surrounding it, and the Flaming Mountains, named for their vibrant color. Then take a train back to Urumqi and connect to the flight for Beijing. Three nights accommodations at the Tianlun Dynasty Hotel (5*).

Oct 1 (Wed) Beijing (B,L,D)

Morning tour to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. After lunch visit the Summer Palace and the Beijing University Museum of Antiques.

Oct 2 (Thu) Beijing (B,L,D)

Day excursion to the Great Wall and Ming Tombs.

Oct 3 (Fri) Beijing/Guangzhou/Los Angeles (B,L)

After breakfast at the hotel, the guide will take us for an enjoyable pedicab tour of Hutongs, the old city neighborhoods of narrow alleyways and courtyard gardens hidden behind Beijing’s modern façade. Visit the Prince Gong’s Palace and the Drum Tower. After lunch, transfer to the airport for our flight back to Guangzhou, connecting to the evening flight to Los Angeles arriving in Los Angeles at 5:50 PM the same day.

Tour Price: $4,995 per person (based on double occupancy)

Tour price includes:

  • All the transpacific air and China domestic air and ground transportation as listed above.
  • All hotels and meals as listed above.
  • A national guide all the way from Guiyang to Beijing
  • The round trip transfer in each city as listed above and all the sightseeing as listed with an English-speaking local guide and a private driver and coach.

Tour Price does not include:

  • China domestic airport construction fee which is RMBY50.00 ($6) for each city and RMBY90.00 ($11) for exiting China from Guangzhou.
  • China visa, $50
  • Travel insurance (optional)
  • Other personal expenses and gratuities for guides and drivers (tips approximately $10/day)
