Ru-Lan,
born in Beijing, China, had distinguished herself as an artist at an early age. In 1962 she entered the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and concentrated on the study of traditional Chinese figure painting. During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Ru-Lan spent three years in Inner Mongolia. In 1978 she returned to the Central Academy of Fine Arts to pursue her masters degree. In 1980 she became a professor at that college. In 1981 Ru-Lan received a teaching scholarship from the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania and came to the United States. She studied contemporary western art and received her second Master of Fine Arts degree in 1984. Ru-Lan then began her art career in the United States. She has had numerous onewoman shows in the United States and Canada. She has instructed at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Philadelphia College of Textile and Science. Ru-Lan uses her artistic talent to bring ordinary life to lively and beautiful art. Her painting has both strong and delicate qualities. Her work has been collected internationally in public and private collections. She now resides in Los Angeles.
This political cartoon "Crowd of Buffoon" was made in 1967 at the beginning of the Chinese Culture Revolution. Ru-Lan was a college student. This cartoon was popular during that time. Later it became one of the symbols of this period and was widely published nationally and internationally. |
